How To Cure That Slice – 4 Golf Tips You Can Use Today To Stop Slicing The Ball

Wednesday Jun 30, 2010

One of the commonest golf faults which can strike any golfer at any time is the slice. If allowed to go unchecked it can get worse and ruin your score card and destroy your confidence as well. If you look closely at a golfer who slices the ball you will notice they play across the ball, that is the golf swing plane is from outside to in, which is just the opposite to what it should be.

I am going to give you four tips to cure that slice.

1. Make sure you pivot properly. From a slightly closed stance, take the club back on the inside swing plane. The slightly closed stance will help you pivot properly.

2. Be sure to make a full pivot with your shoulders. If you aren’t sure how this should look, just watch any top class golfer at the top of his or her back swing to appreciate what a full shoulder turn looks like. Pay particular attention to the angle of the club at the top of the swing. It should be pointing at the target.

3. Keep your hands on the inside as you start the downswing, with the right shoulder coming under and through, rather than out and across. When you first try this it will probably feel strange at first, but work at it on the practise ground until it feels comfortable.

4. Check your grip to see if your left hand has is too far under the club shaft, causing the club face to be too open at impact, which results in a sliced golf shot.

I am confident that if you work on these four tips you can cure that golf slice and enjoy your golf more. Happy golfing!

I need help on proper golf posture. I am a lefty golfer, and I feel my shoulders are not aligned correctly?

Tuesday Jun 22, 2010

My back(left) shoulder is dipped a lot lower than my right shoulder at adress. Is this ok?
Also, is there a way to know if my shoulders are aligned properly to my target? Thanks!

Ryan, Iam a lefty too. Yes your left shoulder should be lower that’s natural and it also mirrors the position you want it to be in when the clubface separates from the ball in your release. Once you have addressed the ball and aligned yourself correctly with the clubface first your chest should be parallel to the target line. To compliment this pre-shot set up, the inside of your left leg should be braced and forward pressed at the knee. Your arms should hang down like an elephants trunk with your hands slightly forward of the ball at what is called impact fix. Your shoulder angle should ensure your head is behind the ball line. Now fire away you are all set, good luck with it!

where can i buy a rawlings cherry bomb driver left handed club at a local retailer in indiana?

Tuesday Jun 22, 2010

Indiana is a big state – without knowing where you are (Evansville? Indy? Ft. Wayne? The Region?) how can we tell you about a "local" retailer?

But here’s one online at Overstock, $28.79 + ship & taxes: http://www.google.com/products?q=rawlings%20cherry%20bomb%20driver%20left%20handed&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGIC_enUS302US302&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wf

i play golf right handed but hold the club like a left handed person?

Tuesday Jun 22, 2010

I hold the club with my right hand on top instead of my left.
I tryed playing the proper way with my left hand on top but it doesnt feel right at all and im dirt when i hold it like that.
Has anyone got any ideas why this is?And if i decide to get lessons, will the teacher force me to use my left hand on top?

Unfortunately "Gravity 4 Me" AND "green_lantern" have chosen to chime in on a topic and confuse the issue at hand, and being as neither have shown any practical knowledge of golf instruction or expertise they’ve once againg chosen to give BAD and WRONG information.

Actually, the first poster "Johnny" is more correct than either of the subsequent posters.
While switching to left-handed might be a viable option, but realistically while you won’t hurt yourself hitting "cross-handed" the fact remains that you lose a lot of your power by doing it the wrong way.
Many new golfers do a lot of things wrong or backwards, because the correct way "doesn’t feel right" – but, since the golfswing is not a natural action, chances are everything about it shouldn’t feel right to the uninitiated and uninformed.

The fact remains that while there are a multitude of grips that "can" work for any given player – whether it be the Overlap/Vardon grip, the Interlock grip, or the Baseball grip – there has never been a successful player or Pro golfer that’s used the "crosshanded grip."
Just in basic premise, having the wrong hand low creates all sorts of of wrong swingplane angles that are difficult to maintain, in addition to a loss of applicable strength and distance.

An example of doing it wrong and changing and becoming successfull is the great hall of fame baseball player Hank Aaron, turned pro using a crosshanded grip like you and was a slap-singles hitter with little to no power, and during his career in the minor leagues coaches convinced him to change to a normal grip – and he became a powerfull hitter almost overnight, one that not only could then hit for average but also one that could hit home runs.

So ulimately, while you can go ahead and keep on doing things as you are I would guess you’ll continue to struggle and never get any better than you are currently. If you want to improve, I would suggest signing up for some lessons with a certified PGA teaching professional so that you can ingrain the basic fundamentals and giving you something to build on.

Again, just because the right way feels wrong now doesn’t make it wrong – while doing it the wrong way will always be wrong. Look at it like this, there’s a reason we use left-hand drive cars in the United States and they use right-hand in England – it’s because we drive on different sides of the road, and not because they just want to be different. It’s that one works for it’s purpose, and doesn’t work the other way around.

Get some proper instruction, and the opposite way to how you’re doing things will soon feel normal.

ADDITIONAL INFO:
Homer Kelly died almost 30 years ago, and wrote his instructional "book" based totally on his theories over 40 years, despite never having acheived any particular level or expertise or having worked as a pro or instructor. AND he never advocated a cross-handed grip either.

Should i upgrade my irons?

Tuesday Jun 22, 2010

i have the callaway 2006 big bertha irons (im left handed) and i got them last year. they’re like full cavity irons and since then i got better and stronger and I’m about a ten handicap give or take, i’m looking to be able to work the ball more and i’m 13 years old. so should i and what are the best option for irons if i should (has to be left handed!!) i was looking at the taylormade burners (regular not plus or tour)

Hi
I don’t think you should upgrade your irons. The clubs you have sound good but its the golfer behind them that makes all the difference.Your only thirteen and your still young but you sound like a good golfer. Keep up the good work!

IS it going to bw hard golfing with my right hand if I’m left handed?

Tuesday Jun 22, 2010

I’m going to learn how to golf this summer ..
Are the left handed clubs the same price as the right handed ones?

Left handed clubs are not very much more expense than right handed clubs.

If you are just learning to play, buy or rent a set of used clubs until you know what you are doing.
You may not enjoy the game which would make the purchase of new clubs a waste of money.

Talk to your local pro.
